How do I configure IP on EDGE and IoE2 modules?

IoE2 / EDGE Ethernet Configuration

Previous to release 5.5.9.38, the Ethernet settings for EDGE and IoE2 were managed in the Callistoview configuration. This creates the possibility of accidentally downloading an incorrect IP address into a unit. To prevent this from happening, the Ethernet settings are now managed within the RTU, separate from the configuration. These settings are accessible though the diagnostic port’s terminal interface (calterm).

The “changeip” command has been added to the EDGE and IoE2. This command allows the user to set the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. Once these values are set using this command, they cannot be changed by downloading to the board. The command must be used again to adjust the Ethernet settings.

Use: While connected to the device via the diagnostic port’s terminal interface, issue the command “changeip” (without quotes). You will be prompted to enter the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway. Once these values are set, the board must be reset for the values to be applied.

Due to this change, the functionality of several fields in Callistoview has been modified. There are three places within Callistoview where an IP address can be entered:

  • The PC Configuration application’s LAN/WAN tab
  • The node setting screen’s advanced settings
  • The Communicate > Download > Set IP address for RTU connection menu

The IP address, subnet mask and default gateway fields in the PC Configuration application’s LAN/WAN tab and the node setting screen’s advanced settings are identical. Changing the value in one will automatically change the value in the other.

The IP address field performs two functions in normal use. It provides a place to store an IP address associated with the given configuration for the user to reference. It also sets the IP address that Callistoview will try to connect to when an IP download is being attempted. This field does not set the IP address in the board unless the user is using the fallback IP method, (see below). The subnet mask and default gateway fields are used only for reference.

The Communicate > Download > Set IP address for RTU connection menu is used to direct Callistoview to the IP address of the RTU for uploading a backup configuration from the RTU. This field should be set to all zeros when downloading or it will override the address set in the LAN/WAN tab and the node setting screen’s advanced settings configuration fields.

Fallback mode: In order to make the transition to the new method of Ethernet configuration as seamless as possible, a fallback method of setting the IP address has been incorporated. If the “changeip” command is not issued, the settings in the PC Configuration application’s LAN/WAN tab will be applied to the RTU. Once the “changeip” command is issued, the RTU will only use the Ethernet settings set by the “changeip” command.

Summary:

  • Use the “changeip” command in calterm to set the Ethernet parameters of the RTU/unit.
  • Use the PC Configuration application’s LAN/WAN tab or the node setting screen’s advanced settings to set the IP address that Callistoview will use to download to.
  • Use the Communicate > Download > Set IP address for RTU connection menu to set the IP address Callistoview uses to upload a backup configuration from the RTU.

Recommended procedure for upgrading to Release 5.5.9.38:

  1. Use Calterm to connect to the diagnostic port on the EDGE or IOE2.
  2. Issue the “ipconfig” command to query the current IP address of the unit.
  3. Setup your computer so that it is able to communicate with the unit over Ethernet.
  4. Create a simple configuration in Callistoview - set the IP address in the PC Configuration application’s LAN/WAN tab to match the IP currently set on the board.
  5. Select IP High Speed from Callistoview’s Setup > COMM port menu.
  6. Download to the unit by selecting “Selected Node” from the Communicate > Download menu.
  7. Once the download is complete, connect the unit using calterm.
  8. Issue the “changeip” command to set the Ethernet parameters.
  9. Reboot the board and download your desired configuration.
